65 North Chronicles
By: hsilio
Christianity has been in Iceland since 1000 AD, but they really never let go of their Norse beliefs...
All around the Island you will find refrences in the form of names of towns and or landmarks that are reminiscent of the days of old. The most popular is of course Thor...
Thor as we all know is the superhero that flies around carrying a hammer, but over here he's a bit more.
Thor is the Norse god of thunder. He is married to Sif, a fertility goddess. His mistress is the giantess Jarnsaxa ("iron cutlass").Thor was usually portrayed as a large, powerful man with a red beard and eyes of lighting. Despite his ferocious appearance, he was very popular as the protector of both gods and humans against the forces of evil. The Norse believed that during a thunderstorm, Thor rode through the heavens on his chariot pulled by the goats Tanngrisni ("gap-tooth") and Tanngnost ("tooth grinder"). Lightning flashed whenever he threw his hammer Mjollnir. His name in ancient norse is Þor (the Þ is pronounced like th in english).
If you'r not thinking by now ,"What's this doing here instead of the scraps page", it's because it's monday, but really, Im getting there..
Today the waves were genuinely Viking style. I surfed a point called Þorlakshofn(pronounced thorlaksop) It was indeed as strong as this Norse god and whose hammer if it got you, worked you... BTW, those rocks in the foreground are the size of VW bugs...
Grimsvotn blew its top under a glacier sending hot ash 300' skyward(among bitcs of ice and rock). a week ago. That Volcano is approximately 150 miles from my pad as the crow flies. It's in a real desolate area, so it's no real danger to lives, but it has increased the melting of the glacier and produce a river of fast moving molten ice, ash and mud.
Ive got steam coming out of the ground near my place, three rifts, a bunch of craters, an extinct perfect volcanic cone and the european- american continental divide is actually one of the beaches I surf at all five minutes from my home.
