Recommend any lights (fitting mtn. bikes/beach cruisers)?

Would like to be able to get the bikes out at night (getting dark so early) and I want to pick up some new lights. Last time I bought lights, they chewed through batteries, so I'd like to see something that provides a longer battery life.

WD?
Paradise?
Keith?

Any suggestions?

Thanks much!

I tell ya' what I did, and it actually worked very well. Extremely well, in fact.

I bought some Scotch 680 reflctive tape (See Hobbies sect) and wrapped my front forks, and put some 8 inch pieces on my rear forks and on the sides of the frame, and it lights up like hell when a car points lights at me from several blocks away. It comes in pretty much the basic 8 crayon colors, and it's "striping" tape, which means once you stick it on, it won't come off. It's pretty much "permanenet, and it's like the stuff they make police car and school bus decals out of.
Good thing is you can get a color that matches your bike, and in daylight, you can't actually "see" it. My frame is actually dark brown and I had to put black tape on it, and that even worked out well.
It's $50 a roll, get 1 inch wide, but if you want black, I have nearly 2/3 of the roll left over, and I'll mail it to you. If you ahve someone who wants to share another color, though, I suggest it.

I try not to ride when it's dark, but I do get caught coming home at dusk a lot, and it really makes it easier for people in cars to see me, especially if I don't have my "rear red" flashing light with me.

I also ride wearing either a Pearl Izumi vest or wind jacket in their "screaming yellow" color (basically safety yellow), which also makes a huge difference. That's pretty much what I've seen everyone in Europe wearing when they are riding.
The vest I have is called a Zephyr, and it has a mesh back that breathes well in hot weather, and the jacket I have for colder weather is the saame lightweight material, but long sleves and full zip-up and I can wear a running shirt under it and stay warm. I had to order mine from Pearl Izumi direct because the bike shops here don't carry it, but in larger cities I've seen the full line for sale on display.

That tape is great for beach cruisers, too, btw, if you are biking home from............church.
You know, the evening weekend services. But I use an LED headlamp I actually bought at Lowe's for a headlight to see the road on my beach cruiser.

How 'bout a good old fashioned bike generator-based lights? You know the ones that you spin with your
wheel rims to make electricity....

there are some cool LED lights that run off these things, apparently.
I wonder if they came up with fancier technology nowadays.. with very low rolling resistance, perhaps...

Shimano hub generator
Less friction force than tirewall generator...

Apparently, LED-based tail lights can be readily driven just by some spoke mounted magnets, so that
can be done with zero wheel resistance.

Mr. Trask is big on the Cateye ones he uses for his commuter bike. Said the battery life is great.

Or, he said dis:

The tail light is nice because if the batteries die and you don't realize it... the thing still works as a reflector, so you A: Don't get Killed. B: Dont get a ticket.
The clothing clip is good also. you can clip it on your backpack if you're hauling something on your bike rack... not that you have a rear rack on your bike... but for me it's good.
Otherwise, get this one.

Another Taillight

Its bright, very light and cheap. Lasts a long time. Works great.

I prefer to ride without a headlight or taillight.

When you are in "Stealth" mode you can sneek up on the cats and run them over.

Yeah, I'm kinda with Kombona. If you get hit by a car, it is kind of your fault anyway. You should never trust a 4000 lbs piece of metal to do what it is supposed to do! Got to keep an eye out no matter what!

Nice. Thanks everyone.

And Kombona, I'm all about stealth, but my wife seems to want lights! But, this way, I'll be able to lose her easier on the way home from the pub.

So the Old Lady wants Bike Lights. We have stumbled upon a establishment that has 120 beers available....50 of which are on tap. So that will mean some weekend night time rides home with the bikes.

Now I have looked into bike lights but they all seem to be a rip off. As a diver I have dive lights that cost me 30 bucks that have way more power than any of the affordable bike lights.

So now I need to figure out away to mount the flashlights we have on our bikes. Anyone have any ideas?

Lawless can I hire you as a "consultant" to build me some flashlight bike holders? We all know you are the DIY MAN!
